Šibenik sits behind the St Anthony channel, which means flat water on departure day and two national parks — Kornati and Krka — inside a comfortable day's sail. It is the base we recommend most often for crews who want quiet anchorages rather than nightlife.
Getting to Šibenik
Šibenik has no airport of its own. Most crews fly into Split (SPU, about 55 minutes by road) or Zadar (ZAD, about 1 hour). Both airports have direct summer flights from Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo, and a transfer to Mandalina or Solaris is straightforward on a Saturday afternoon.
Wind, sea and season
The channel entrance is protected in almost any weather, so the first hour out of Šibenik is always calm. Once past Zlarin the afternoon maestral fills in from the north-west at 10–18 knots. Kornati is exposed to the bura in early spring and late autumn — most skippers plan a bail-out into Žirje or Vodice on those days.

- Is Šibenik a good base for a first bareboat week in Croatia?
- Yes. The exit from the marina is sheltered, distances between islands are short (8–15 nautical miles), and the Kornati archipelago has mooring balls with a service boat rather than tricky anchoring, which suits crews who are new to Croatia.
- Do I need a ticket for Kornati National Park?
- Yes, entry is charged per vessel per day and is not included in the charter price. Tickets are cheaper bought in advance at a park office or online than from the ranger boat inside the park.
- Can I sail from Šibenik to Krka waterfalls?
- You sail up the Krka estuary to Skradin, moor there, and take the national park boat to the falls. Yachts cannot continue past Skradin.
